He graduated from Loyola High School in 1962 and from Loyola College (magna cum laude)with a Bachelor of Arts (pre-med)in 1966. From here, he attended medical school at McGill University, completing his stint there successfully in 1970. McCracken then fulfilled his rotating internship and three years of residency in internal medicine at the University of Alberta. Subsequently, he completed another 18 months of residency in internal medicine and nephrology respectively at the Montral General Hospital in Montreal, Quebec. He joined the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons as a specialist in Internal Medicine in 1975. McCracken moved into geriatric medicine in 1978 & Became certified in that discipline by the Royal College in 1981. He became the Coordinator of Geriatrics at McGill University in 1978 and division director of that specialty in 1983. McCracken was appointed Chief of the department of Medicine at St Mary's hospital in 1981. He became chairman of the specialty committee in geriatric medicine for the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada from 1984 until 1990. Through most of this career, he dedicated his clinical practice to the teaching and the care of ill, frail elderly patients. McCracken retired in 2006 and continues as a professor Emeritus in the department of Medicine, division of geriatrics.
